Understanding Academic Language (formerly the Text Pattern Strategy) teaches students how authors of content area texts use academic language to convey meaning. The Visual Imagery Strategy is a reading comprehension strategy for creating mental movies of narrative passages. Students visualize the scenery, characters, and action and describe the scenes to themselves as they read each sentence in a passage. The Paraphrasing Strategy is designed to help students focus on the most important information in a passage and to improve students' recall of main ideas and specific facts. The Paired Associates Strategy helps students independently and in an organized way approach large bodies of information they need to master. Using the strategy, students identify pairs or groups of items that are important to learn, such as names and events, places and events, or names and accomplishments.
